GRADING POLICY: There will be two exams (100 points each) and a comprehensive final (100 points). Homework exercises, quizzes, programs and group projects will be averaged and counted as one test (100 points). Your final grade will be determined by the percentage of 400 total points:
90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D Below 60% = F
GRADUATE STUDENTS are required to research and describe two computer hardware and/or software systems that can be modeled with Arena. The class will be divided into programming teams. Each team will implement an Arena simulation for your specified system. You will devise a scheme for collecting data from the simulation and divide the data collection among the programming teams. When the data are available you will collect the team’s documentation and results and prepare a summary and conclusions. The completed project report must be in html format and should contain: (1) description of the physical system, (2) teams’ program documentation, (3) statistics collected, (4) summary and conclusions, (5) suggestions for future research. The first system you describe should focus on a single part of a computer system, the second system should focus on the integration of two or more parts of a computer system. Some suggested areas are operating system functions, hardware configurations, network configurations, data base storage and retrieval.
You must get your topic approved. Email me a brief description of the topic for project 1 no later than September 8th and project 2 no later than October 22nd. Your description of first project should be ready to present to the class on September 17th and the second on October 29th.
Each project with count 25 points. Your final grade will be determined by the percentage of 450 total points.
90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D Below 60% = F
EXAMINATION POLICY: It is the responsibility of the student to take all of the exams at the scheduled times, except in very unusual circumstances. If you must miss an exam you must inform me (the instructor) in advance of the reason for your absence and present proof of your excuse. Make sure that I am aware of any memorandum showing that you will be participating in a University sponsored trip.
ASSIGNMENT POLICY: Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the assigned date. At my discretion, assignments may be accepted late until I have graded that assignment. No assignment will be accepted past that time. No assignment will be accepted if you have cut class to complete it. Assignments that are not group assignments are to be individual efforts - that is, each person's assignment should be uniquely their own. The first assignment which is found to be a duplicate or near duplicate will receive a grade of 0; the second such assignment will result in a grade of F for the course. Assignments will be covered on the tests. Specific READING ASSIGNMENTS will not be made. It is your responsibility to read the chapters BEFORE they are covered in class, even if no specific reading assignments are made.
ONLINE RESOURCES: The course web site may be accessed through http://utconline.utc.edu using your 6 character student id and password. Be sure that your email is being sent to the appropriate address.
